On May 25, the Diocese of El Paso, Texas, became the first diocese in the state to publicly commit to the Laudato Si’ Action Platform (LSAP) by signing the pledge, announcing it, and launching a diocesan action plan. This significant step was taken in collaboration with the Laudato Si’ Diocesan Commission, marking a profound commitment to ecological conversion and care for our common home.
The celebration took place with a special Mass at St. Luke Catholic Church, presided over by Bishop Mark Seitz. In his homily, Bishop Seitz drew attention to recent scientific reports—melting ice sheets in the Arctic and Greenland and more intense hurricane forecasts—reminding us that creation is under threat. “Leaving that scientific news aside,” he said, “we must consider what the Lord has left us, what we know from the Scriptures, and what all of creation says to us.” He reminded the faithful that we are not lords over the Earth, and that caring for our common home is a spiritual and moral duty. He read from the opening paragraphs of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, emphasizing that “we have no other home; we must care for what we have.”
This moment was not only a celebration of a milestone, but a call to action. The Diocese of El Paso is setting an example for other dioceses across Texas and beyond, showing that commitment to creation care is both possible and necessary. With the backing of the diocesan commission, the action plan includes education, sustainable practices, and strong collaboration with local organizations.
At the close of the Mass, parishioners gathered to continue celebrating. Environmental organizations were present to share their work and invite the community to engage more deeply in caring for creation. The atmosphere was one of unity, joy, and shared purpose—reminding us that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a greater movement of hope and renewal.
