An initiative to inspire and connect Ohio Catholics in caring for our common home

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE: September 16, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Committed Catholics across Ohio are coming together to launch the Laudato Si’ Movement Ohio Chapter, a statewide movement to encourage Ohio Catholics and communities to focus on the sacred relationship between humanity and God’s creation. This chapter kickoff is spearheaded by David Frea, in this pivotal year marking the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s passing.

The kickoff begins in prayer celebrating the new votive Mass for Care of Creation at parishes throughout Ohio during the season of creation and culminates online and in-person at local parishes on October 24 at 10 A.M. We will listen to speakers, Archbishop Casey, Dr. Lorna Gold and Sr Terri Schell OP, about the importance Ohio has for Catholics and the environment. It will include in-person and online “Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor” Synodal listening sessions, prayer, and facilitated in breakout groups.

This unique initiative invites participants to cultivate a renewed commitment to caring for creation. Ohio is an ideal place for Catholics to mobilize for our planet, with its agricultural expertise and universities, nine dioceses, fourteen Catholic universities, numerous religious orders, Great Lake, and its historical roots in nature, even getting its name from the Seneca word referring to the beautiful Ohio River. Wherever someone tunes in to this kickoff event, all members share the same mission of restoring our relationship with God, with each other, and with the Earth.

“We are thrilled to have leaders from three of Ohio’s dioceses already engaged in this effort, and blessed to have Archbishop Casey of Cincinnati as our Episcopal Sponsor”, said David Frea, chapter animator.

Catholic individuals, families, faith communities, and organizations are all invited to participate in the Chapter launch. “The Laudato Si Movement is thrilled that Ohio is launching a Chapter to build community and impactful action in caring for our common home. The chapter leaders are profoundly motivated to care for the planet in creative ways, and we have no doubt that this group, rooted in the Holy Spirit, will accomplish amazing things. Truly, ‘with God, all things are possible,’” said Anna Johnson, Director of Laudato Si’ Movement – North America.
