Building a Culture of Care for Creation at St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Bridgewater

Feb 16, 2026 | North America – New Jersey

The Green Team at St. Bernard of Clairvaux parish in Bridgewater has been contributing to parish life through initiatives to reduce energy consumption, decrease plastic use, clean up local bodies of water, or enjoy creation through hikes.  During Advent, attention is given to living simply and during Lent, parishioners are asked to reconsider traditional approaches to fasting and think about fasting in order to build a culture of caring for Creation.

This year, the Lenten challenge is to cause the bare tree in the photo to flower and bloom through acts that reduce, reuse, and recycle.  The tree is in the narthex and there is a basket of green leaves that have suggestions for activities for parishioners to perform throughout Lent.  Once the activity is complete, families or individuals will “hang” them on the tree.  As Green Team member Doreen Sekora says, “We are hoping to have a tree in full bloom for Easter.”

Check back to watch the leaves develop.
